Downtown Austin traces its origins back to 1839, when it was chosen as the capital’s site by Mirabeau B. Lamar, the president of the Republic of Texas. He oversaw the design of the city plan, and the grid-like streets of downtown were laid out. The city slowly grew, with notable landmarks such as the Texas State Capitol being built before anything else.

The area continued to grow after the Civil War, and the railroad that ran through the neighborhood caused the economy to thrive in Downtown Austin. Throughout the late 20th century, many of the area’s historic buildings were restored to look like new again. Then, the tech boom of the 21st century transformed Downtown Austin into a cosmopolitan hub, offering a blend of historic charm and modern technology.
