Nash Phillips is considered to be the single greatest contributor to the development of Austin’s residential real estate market. At age 90, Phillips passed away last week at Seton Medical Center Austin with his family at his side. Phillips founded Nash Phillips/Copus Builders Inc. in 1945 which later evolved into the one of the nation’s largest private homebuilding companies.
Over forty years, Nash Phillips/Copus Builders Inc. constructed more than 50,000 homes in Allandale, Cherry Creek, Windsor Hills and suburbs surrounding Austin. More than 12 former workers at Nash Phillips/ Copus Builders Inc. went on to form their own homebuilding companies as a part of Phillips’s “NPC University.” Phillips also later went on to found another company called Wilshire Homes.
One former employee of Nash Phillips/Copus Builders Inc., Mark Sprague, said of the company, “They controlled more than 65 percent of all single-family homes build in the Austin area and over 80 percent of all multifamily construction. They oversaw more of the market by themselves than the top 10 builders in Austin do now, combined.”
